Associate Engineer

​

Job Summary:

The Associate Engineer is responsible for assisting with operations at the farm and lab (the facility), including cultivation and growth, work flow and data collection, determining staffing needed and responsibilities, safety, environmental safety, maintenance, repairs, and operating procedures and practices.

With consultative direction, this position exercises latitude in determining development and solutions for designated investigations or projects. Functioning in an advisory or leadership role participates in the planning and oversight of the successful resolution and implementation of scientific problems and provides direction and guidance to professional and support staff. Assists with formulating technical plans, typically multi-year, for solution development, documentation, and deployment of the scientific or technical solutions. Evaluates the integration of the solution within the overall scientific environment; and responsible for planning and overseeing documentation, testing, maintenance, and technical updates. Assists in the recruitment process for professional and support staff. Motivates, and develops professional and support staff. Recognized to possess authoritative knowledge on the concepts, principles and methods in their specific field of engineering or science.

Essential Functions:

  1. Collaborates with Company technical team on the goals and objectives for the facility

  2. Coordinates the weekend facility schedule for production, testing, maintenance, repairs, upgrades, and modifications with other technical and executive staff

  3. Determines staffing needs and other resources at the facility to accomplish the production, research and development objectives

  4. Oversees the procurement, inventory, storage, and use of consumables and other materials needed for operation of the facility

  5. Anticipates and evaluates improvements in the process, operating procedures, controls, data collection, data reporting, equipment design, workflow, staffing plans, and safety protocols at the facility

  6. Formulates, plans, and guides the development of innovative and practical solutions to advanced technical or scientific problems

  7. Anticipates and evaluates future project or scientific needs and communicates those needs with the executive team

  8. Design system components, and modifications to accomplish technical goals

  9. Directs and allocates technical resources and professional staff to achieve objectives

  10. Participates in the planning, retention, and development of the professional staff

  11. Publishes and presents technical papers and abstracts and participates in internal and external technical program reviews

  12. Feeds algae ponds, performs pond transfers and harvesting

  13. Reads diagrams, process sheets, and assembly and schematic drawings

  14. Operates the Zobi Harvester and oversees harvests

  15. Assists in fabrication, assembly, and installation of basic experimental and commercial equipment

  16. Uses and maintains farm equipment; cleans outdoor ponds, tanks, and sumps as needed

  17. Uses and maintains lab equipment, such as UV-Vis spectrophotometers, gravimetric instruments, and elemental analyzers

  18. Records information on appropriate production records, logs and other report forms; provides inputs to reports as required

  19. Responsible for developing SOPs for all farm processes

  20. Assists with local procurement

  21. Participates in the onboarding process to ensure all technicians are properly trained

  22. Interacts with co-workers, suppliers, customers, and partners in a professional, considerate, and respectful manner

  23. Fosters an environment of safety, camaraderie, and integrity in all aspects of work

  24. Observes all laws, regulations, other applicable obligations, and Company ethical standards while on duty, wherever and whenever business is conducted on behalf of the Company

  25. Performs work in a safe manner in accordance with established operating procedures and practices

  26. Notifies human resources of any activities that could violate or have the appearance of violating laws, regulations, obligations, ethical standards, potentially unsafe working conditions, procedures, or practices

Qualifications, Skills and Physical Demands:

  • Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree, of Ph.D. in Scientific, Engineering or related technical field. Typical minimum experience is zero to five years.

  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate workflow and effectively communicate with staff at all levels in a complex operating environment

  • Technical capability includes a versatile knowledge of the facility’s process, design, operating procedures, troubleshooting, maintenance requirements, safety plan, and environmental concerns

  • Demonstrates a detailed and extensive technical expertise and application of scientific principles, concepts, theory, and practice as well as project leadership including organizing, planning, scheduling, and coordinating workloads to meet established project deadlines or milestones.

  • Must possess the ability to contribute to the development of new concepts and principles; resolve unusually complex technical problems; serve as spokesperson on projects and/or programs; and be a technical expert in one or more areas of scientific investigation.

  • Customer focused, formulates plans based on the development of innovative new designs in resolving advanced technical scientific problems

  • Must be able to work weekend shifts and travel as required

  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position and use a computer or equipment for most of the day

  • Must be able to move 50 pounds at one time; multiple times throughout the workday

  • Must be able to work outdoors all day in outdoor weather conditions, traverse algae farm, ascend/descend ladders, and remain in a stationary position 

  • Positions self at ground level to perform tasks such as equipment maintenance and sample collection

  • Must be able to work indoors in the lab traversing the lab while transporting samples

  • Willing to work in or near unusual environments such as pressurized air, high voltage, microwave energy, heat, cryogens, water ponds, high places, and heavy objects.

  • Must have strong communication, computer, documentation, leadership, presentation, and interpersonal skills; enabling an effective leadership interface with other departments, professional and support staff, customers, potential customers, and government representatives

  • Computer literate with the knowledge of applications pertinent to position objectives

  • Must be able to communicate via phone, video conference, and email with co-workers and business contacts

  • Must have ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment and learn new concepts quickly

  • Must be able to think strategically and have the ability to use independent judgment

  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality
